Smallmouth bass fishing on Lake Erie is legendary. These fish typically inhabit the rocky shores and reefs in the island area, and they spawn when the water temperature reaches 55 to 60 degrees. The most effective way to catch big bass is with soft craws or leeches, although pumpkin seed green tube jigs work well too.

In Ohio from May 1st to June 29th, smallmouth is catch and release only. After June 29th, in order to keep a smallmouth it must be at least 14 inches, and the limit is 5 per person. It is our belief that trophy-sized smallmouth should be released after being caught, so that the presence of trophy smallies in Lake Erie will continue for years to come.
